INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S ORGANIZATION OF GREECE
& Visit to the Bird Sanctuary
Our starting point will be the Ecological Park in Kalohori at 10:00am. We will walk towards the estuary of Gallikos River, where we will have the opportunity to watch flamingos and other birds with special binoculars provided by the Axios Delta Management Authority and be informed by Stella (MSc in Pollution & Environmental Control) about the preservation work in the area. After a 5,5 km walk, we will drive to the Bird Sanctuary. Following this, we will have lunch at a local taverna. Make sure you have your cameras with you!
Stella Vareltzidou is a conservation biologist from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) with an MSc in Pollution and Environmental Control, from Manchester University (Erasmus with AUTH). Since 1993 she has worked for the Hellenic Ornithological Society (7 years), Axios Delta Management Authority (13 years) and as an independent environmental consultant until today.
Stella Vareltzidou - Free Lance Biologist and Eva Katrana - Ornithologist, of the Delta Management, showed us around a fraction of the Natura 2000 area of the Kalochori lagoon and the Gallikos Delta. Dimitra-Lida Rammou - Biologist Phd in the Susliks explained a few things about susliks that are plenty in the area. Froso Parcharidou - ornithologist (Apus-Apus specialist) and one of the managers of the Action for Wildlife, explained to us the works of the Sanctuary. We adopted a bird and had a chance of freeing a little bittern after a short recovery period at the sanctuary. Finally, we had a lovely lunch at a local taverna called "Karnagio" in Kalohori.
