IWOG is a secular, non-profit, non-political organization, first established in 1948 as AWOG, (The American Women’s Organization of Greece), to offer philanthropic assistance to the Greek people torn by civil war. Over the years, AWOG branched out from a purely welfare organization to a more social and educational one, although welfare still continued to be a predominant concern as needy organizations turned to them for help during the post Civil War reconstruction years.

As the community changed and more foreigners came to Thessaloniki in the 1970’s AWOG became IWOG (The International Women’s Organization of Greece). Now its primary role is as a social and charitable group which welcomes foreign women to Thessaloniki and offers help to other charities, as well as, needy individuals. IWOG is for all women residing in Northern Greece, with the English language as their common bond.

We aim to foster friendships, cross-cultural understanding and community support. All money raised through our philanthropic efforts goes to help local charities, as well as others, especially women and children in great need.
